Don’t hide your talents…but do pull up your pants!
I learned an important lesson this week…unfortunately I learned it the hard way. My friend Karen called me last Saturday as I was driving home. As we were talking she told me her computer was taking forever to boot up. I guess some guy tried to fix it for her and horked it pretty bad. He was probably trying to in impress her and had no clue what he was doing. I thought about offering to try and help her fix the damage that had already been done, but I was tired and with held my services…Oh boy would I regret that decision.
I went home and started messing with my computer that was working just fine, but quickly things went from bad to worse. I got it into a funky state and coincidentally was having similar problems Karen was having, with long boot up times. I then kept getting the BSOD. I reformatted my computer with no luck and have gone to great lengths just to get it back. I worked on my computer all week and still have not got it back to perfect, but at least it is stable. Although I have learned a lot the past week, i wish I didn’t ruin my computer in the first place. I wish I had helped Karen that night and not messed with my computer. So it all might have been a coincidence that I horked my computer, but I have always believed something I heard a while ago “the only difference between a coincidence and a miracle, is your willingness to see the Lord’s hand in your life.” The same goes with lessons in life. I learned a lesson not to hide my talents like the servant that hide the one talent the Lord gave him in the parable. (Matthew 25:14-30). I believe the Lord taught me a lesson this last week and I’m going to work on serving others.
So my challenge to all of you is to either share one of your talents with others or to think of new talent that you want to cultivate and start working on that talent today. I have already told Karen I will come fix her computer and I also want to learn how to cook, so I’m going to work on getting home earlier and cooking dinner for myself.

That photo is all too familiar to me. It is the end I see most of when my husband is fixing computers. So is “horked” a technical term? I am glad you found a lesson to be learned. Good luck with the cooking (it can be difficult to cook for one…or two for that matter). Love you!
I can’t be-LIEVE you are beating up on yourself for not lending a helping hand!!! As I recall, you spent a WHOLE day –long distance, I might add–trying to “de-hork” my laptop in Florida!!! YOU, Jon, personify selflessness!!!
@Bonz
Yeah I bet you see that quite a bit, but you enjoy looking at it! Yes, horked is a geeky-technical term. Note the second definition on the very reliable site Urban Dictionary Definition of Horked.
I think that a true geek never reaches a point where the computer is ‘perfect’. There is ALWAYS something to tweak, some new program to install, or new technology to learn. And for better or worse that process generally is fraught with ‘learning experiences’ that make us want to forever swear off technology and become MFHD majors

But in retrospec you realize how much you truly learned from all these moments and how much better off your are as a result — for example I know that next time you wanna play on your computer you will image it first and have a quick backup copy on hand.
Speaking of sharing talents I am open for someone to share their talents with me — I am at am impass with my server and getting virtual domains and postfix to play nicely — so if you know anyone with the skills to give me some pointers, I would appreciate it
!!
Love the advice. Thank you.
