Catching the Information Wave

WaveTechnology is an amazing thing! With the internet and social media we are able to share ideas, videos, and images to an incredible amount of people, in a few hours, and for free. This information is like an ocean wave and like a California beach bum I love riding this wave of information. Finding funny videos, great blog posts, and information about new exciting technology are all things I love to do. I will usually see something on Digg, a blog I read, or be sent something  funny or interesting and then a few weeks later someone in my office will send the same clip or post around the office. I would say that I’m pretty well connected to Information hubs (sources of new information worth sharing). I followed the Palm Pre very closely before it came out. The day it arrived in Sprint stores I dropped by a store and actually was able to teach the employees how to use it. I have learned how to search the web for information and to find related and relevant information. A skill I’m quite proud of.

Although this is a passion and I find great joy in finding something of worth that others find interesting, just like surfing in real life, digital surfing can be exhausting. There are many times I have come across a technology that has been around for a few years and I have not heard about it. I become overwhelmed my the wealth of knowledge crashing down on me every moment of the day. It is at these moments that I wonder if I’m making my life to information rich and complex. I wonder what I would be lacking if I simplified my life. What did people do before the internet and new information was not at their fingertips. It is something I go back and forth on and have not yet been able to find a good balance.

Not only do I like to find treasures of the internet, but I like to share them as well. I have tried to figure out a good way to balance all the different technologies that allow me to share this wealth of information. I have dabbled with blogging, twitter, Facebook, Google reader, and don’t know which technology serves my needs the best. Or if a mix is what I need. So I decided to create a strategy that will help me know what technology I will use for what purpose.

Blog – My blog will be where I put original content. I might post a video or image from another source, but will usually have some commentary about it.

Twitter – Twitter will be for sharing links and cool little treasures I find while surfing the net. These are usually images and videos.

Facebook – This will be more personal and specific to my friends and family, but I have integrated Twitter and facebook, because a lot of my friends are not on Twitter and I still want them to get my tweets.

Google Reader – Is a place where I can spread cool posts of my favorite blogs.

I’m starting to get a little burned out with the information overload. I think I might try to scale back my participation in Twitter, Facebook, Google Reader, Digg, Reddit, Blogs, e-mail, StumbleUpon, Youtube, LinkedIn, FriendFeed, TheSixtyOne and the like. It’s a lot to keep on top of, and I’m starting to feel tired.
